The New Vic is the producing theatre for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Our mission is to make excellent theatre-in-the-round, and to be a force for positive change in our region. Our home was the first purpose built, theatre-in-the-round in the whole of Europe. With nine major productions a year, we present a varied and adventurous programme including contemporary drama, new commissions, innovative adaptations and accessible classics. We make theatre in an area of significant social and economic disadvantage. Many of the communities we serve rank high in the government’s Indices of Multiple Deprivation; but it is an area where arts and culture are making a vital contribution to improving aspiration and attainment and we are proud to be at the forefront of this. This is a creative area where culture is flourishing: audiences in the last few years have been the highest in our 50-year history; we recently transferred our first productions to London and Manchester; we have a three year relationship with the RSC’s Learning and Performance Network; we were the first building-based affiliate company of the National Theatre Studio; recent work has received UK Theatre and Manchester Theatre awards and nominations. And we lead Appetite, a major audience development programme which, in three years, has attracted audiences of more than 300,000 – in an area with previously some of the highest numbers of non-arts attenders.
