To:25-05-2024

This is the first time that Talawa has taken Talawa Firsts to key cities outside of London. The two pieces complement each other hugely, using off-beat humour to tackle themes of extraction, temporality in people and places, (be)longing and the perils of late-stage capitalism. Bougie Lanre’s Boulangerie by acclaimed poet Kareem Parkins-Brown is an existential poetry talk show chronicling Kareem’s years working in the hospitality industry, attempting to make ends meet as a Black, working-class artist who cares more about craft than consumerism. It’s the job of long-suffering waiting staff, servers and cooks to be kind; serving and embodying kindness, with a smile on each and every shift. Or is it…? Putting the ‘cuss dem’ in customer, through ingenious wordplay and graphic visuals, Kareem exposes a world of raging waiters, kind cooks, rude customers and gentrifying pop-ups that had audiences howling- as well as reconsidering how they behave in restaurants.

The evening begins with a short opera about the pursuit of love, fish and chips, and a loo. This charming and quirky escapade intertwines melodies of life and laughter, with every character just one song away from discovering that we all have a lot more in common than we think. The piece was co-created by people with lived experience of homelessness in Streetwise Opera’s weekly workshops at the Nottingham Playhouse, working with librettist Paterson Joseph, composer David Austin Grey, director Beth Kapila, designer Debbie Duru and music director Tim Lole, inspired by the music of Joseph Bologne (Chevalier de Saint-Georges), George Bridgetower and other composers of African and Caribbean heritage. The event continues with a performance by actor and writer Paterson Joseph of his monologue “Sancho & Me – For One Night Only”. This play focuses on the life and works of British abolitionist, writer and composer Charles Ignatius Sancho, who was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729, and yet became a writer, composer, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’ in 18th century London.

My wife Mary says I should get a proper job, but there’s not time – I’m about to retire! Besides, Comet – where I used to demonstrate audio equipment – no longer exists. As for the sweet factory in the Rotherham area where I worked as a security guard in the 1980’s – that’s now an Axe Throwing Centre. Oof!”
