Norwich Puppet Theatre (NPT) is one of only three dedicated puppet theatres in England and provides a year round programme of puppet shows and workshops. Housed in the purpose converted Mediaeval church of St James’ there is an instant wow factor as you enter the foyer and see the display of puppets from the Theatre’s 36 year history. The building has a ‘Tardis’ feel in that people are surprised to find a fully equipped 170 raked seat theatre space in what was the main aisle of the church. The seating focuses on the stage – equipped with puppet trench and marionette bridge – and ensures all audience members get a good view of what is going on. The stage hosts Norwich Puppet Theatre’s own productions, as well as those from visiting puppet companies, and the boards are trodden by drama, music and dance groups as well. The Octagon studio – added in 1985 – works as a multifunctional space hosting our very popular puppet making workshops (for all ages from 2 years up) as well as performances of shows for the very young. As a centre for excellence the Theatre offers regular professional development opportunities through its masterclass workshops working with international practicioners. NPT’s community role cannot be underestimated and the Theatre regularly welcomes school groups to performances and workshops. However travel is not open to all, so NPT on the road is an important part of the Theatre’s work – visiting venues across the country with our productions, as well as taking workshops and shows into Norfolk and Suffolk schools.
