The Dukes is a registered charity. The Dukes is the only building-based professional producing theatre in Lancashire and has for many years received regular funding from Arts Council England, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster City Council. More than 500,000 people have attended The Dukes promenade plays since 1987, making them the biggest walkabout theatre event in the UK. The Dukes has been an independent cinema since it opened in 1971. In 2013-14, 143,152 people attended Dukes events – a company record. The Dukes Creative Learning Department is rated outstanding by Arts Council England. The Dukes won the inaugural Lancashire Tourism Cultural Venue/Organisation Award in 2013.
